Does Better Looking Content Actually Perform Better?
There's a myth that floats around…
Better looking content automatically performs better.
More polish, more production, more shine, and the results follow. It feels intuitive. We're taught pretty early that quality equals value, so it makes sense that we'd assume the same applies to what we post.
But we're living in a moment where anyone can pick up a phone and put a thought in front of thousands of people in seconds. That access changed what "performs well" actually means. High production used to be a built-in advantage. It isn't anymore, not automatically.
Sometimes it can even work against you. Content that's too polished can make a brand feel further away instead of closer, depending on who you're trying to reach. If your audience is looking for something that feels real and reachable, a highly produced piece can read as distant, even a little cold, no matter how good it looks.
This is part of why I don't position myself as visuals first. Not because visuals don't matter. They do, in fact audio is key in staying quality lol. But the right level of polish depends entirely on who you're talking to and what you're trying to accomplish. There isn't one correct answer.
Quality isn't a ladder you climb toward something better. It's a dial you set based on purpose. Sometimes the most basic, homegrown, UGC style content is exactly the right strategy. Sometimes crisp, clean, and cinematic is what the moment calls for. Neither one is inherently better. They just serve different jobs.
So before asking how to make something look good, it's worth asking what it actually needs to feel like to reach the people you're trying to reach. That question matters more than the answer people usually reach for first.
Now I actually want to hear from you.
When you're scrolling, do you notice what stops you the most? Something cinematic or something realistic?
