How to Build a Brand Reputation for Your Small Business

Blogtober! Day 3 of 31 · Sat, Oct 3, 2026

I was talking with another photographer recently about how fall feels like a season of new beginnings.

It can also make it a hectic one, with so much starting at once. That fresh-start feeling makes it a good time to step back and think about how people see your business, and who you want to be as you head into the end of the year.

What brand reputation is

Your brand reputation is what people say about your business when you're not in the room. It's how a customer describes you to a friend, what someone remembers after seeing your post, and the feeling people walk away with after working with you.

A lot of my work lives here. Working with Brand Photography, Social Media Content Creation, and Content Strategy is a piece of what we’d call: brand development. What people see is often the first thing that shapes what they associate with you.

Let’s start building your reputation intentionally

It's tempting to start with how you want other people to see you. The trouble is that building a reputation around what you think others want can turn into chasing approval, and that's hard to keep up for long.

So start with you.

Who do you want to be as a business, and why do you do what you do? Your why is what keeps your reputation steady, because it comes from something you already believe in.

From there, let your values guide it.

Your why and your values go hand in hand, and if you worked through the check-in yesterday's post on brand values, you already have a head start.

Then make sure what people see reflects it.

Your visuals and content are often where people first meet your business, so they're where your why has the best chance of coming through. When what people see matches who you are, what they say about you starts to match too.

I'm working on this too.

For me, heading into the end of the year, that means growing FroMotion into a resource for business owners who want their content to create a stable foundation for their business and a community to support it. That's the way I've always envisioned it, and now I'm making the intentional time to make sure it happens, piece by piece.

As fall brings its own new beginnings,
take a minute with this:
What do you want to be known for, and why?

Share it in the comments if you'd like. I'd love to hear it.

This post is part of the Ultimate Blog Challenge, where bloggers publish a new post every day this month. It's not too late to join in, and you can catch up on Day 2 here.

Day 3, done. Twenty-eight to go.
